This is a project for a one storey rear extension for two storey terraced house in London.
This is a typical 4 meters one storey rear extension. The ground floor is formed in 150 mm thick reinforced concrete ground bearing slab reinforced with one layer of A252 mesh in top throughout.
The foundations are 600 mm wide eccentric and concentric mass concrete trench footings with minimum depth of 1000 mm from ground level.
The roof is formed in flat roof joists bearing on timber plate on one side and steel beams B1 & B2 on the other side.
In this project, the challenge was the transport of steel beam B2 through the house. The steel beam B2 is a 5 meters long beam and the only way to transport the beam from the street to the rear of the house was through the house. For this purpose we have proposed a solution to split the beam in two pieces with splice connection (shown on drawing 03).
The structural drawings and calculations were submitted and approved by Building Control.
The steel beam was successfully transported to the rear of the house and installed.
The building works were finished in approximately three months time.
